QH-50C Model

We are proud to show the Best of Show Winner at the 1997 IPMS (USA) National Convention in Ohio. Entered in the scratch built category, Mr. Ben Gunther's little 1/48 scale model of the Gyrodyne QH-50 DASH (Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter) is a real stunner. The pictures of it below were taken last year at the Northern Virginia Model Classic where it won the Judges Grand Award. Photos by John Hairell.

Archivist's notes: This model shows an incredible eye for detail. Note the engine screen, lying on the table for the BO-4 engine! How about the submarine logo on the tank that only a few QH-50's had. The gear is even scraped up due to abuse and the rotor blades were the more colorful wooden blades vs. opaque fiberglass blades installed during FY 1965. While the only mistake might be the fluorescent orange on both tail sides (one side was green) and the green is not the fluorescent color used, the attention to detail is incredible and we at the Gyrodyne Helicopter Historical Foundation salute Mr. Gunther for his fine quality of work.
